IN THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS GIVING
BIRTH OF A NEW-OLD TRADITION
PUTTING USA PEOPLE BACK TO WORK

By: Camille Harris
Posted: 11/18/11

Whether it is locally or nationwide, together, we can organically LIFT our LOCAL economy by supporting LOCAL businesses and LOCALLY manufactured products for Christmas.

Christmas 2011 -- Birth of a New Tradition

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide North Americans with monstrous piles of CHEAPLY PRODUCED GOODS --

This year we can give the gift of genuine concern for our own community.

It's time to think outside the box, people. Many people get their haircut. How about gift certificates from your local hair salon or barber?

Gym membership? Manicure or pedicure? What about a handy-person gift certificate for a senior who needs repairs?

Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, privately owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.

Before plunking down your dollars on a Chinese made flat-screen, think again. Perhaps that gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or yard cleanup, or games at the local golf course.

Owner-run restaurants offer gift certificates. What about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint? Remember, folks this is about supporting your hometown friends and neighbors with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the neighborhood-working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for Mom or Grandma? Mom or Grandma would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady or service for a day.

Your computer could likely use a tune-up, and you KNOW you can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.

Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes.

We have amazingly talented artists here, what about a piece of local art or a gift certificate for art? We have local winemakers, nurseries, health food stores, book stores, gift stores, you name it, we've got it here, so let's support ourselves and lift our own economy.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theater? Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands and give tickets.

Honestly, do we REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, hair stylist or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

Christmas is now about caring about each other, encouraging local small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other our neighbors, we care about our community, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine.

Last but not least, shop locally and for those products MADE IN USA. MOST IF NOT ALL BOUTIQUES, SHOPS AND STORES HAVE MADE IN USA PRODUCTS ON THEIR SHELVES. Even if it is a limited supply, buy them. Leave the Chinese products sitting on business owners' shelves. Send a clear message that we support local business and American jobs.

Let's make this local caring our new Christmas tradition.

Please, forward this to everyone on your mailing list. This is a revolution of caring about each other, and isn't that what Christmas is about? Add, and remember a donation to local charity in a youngster's name (let them choose).

Merry Christmas & Happy Holiday Shopping

Getting To Know Ventura
One Neighborhood At a Time

By: Kathy O'Keefe
Republished: 05/18/11

To really get to know someone, you need to spend sometime with them. It's much the same with a town or city and Ventura is no exception to that rule. With a variety of neighborhoods over a several mile radius, getting to know Ventura, "One Neighborhood At A Time" is one good way to go about this. Past the storefronts, past the signs or pictures on the wall, past the front door of each small shop in the City of Ventura and there is a story one that is unique to that store and to that storeowner. It may come as a surprise to some or unnecessary information to others; however, for those who wish to learn more, these stories are worth the telling.

Just a few short East Main Street blocks (between Santa Cruz and Seaward) there is easy parking and the ocean scent in the breezy air. Through each of the owner's stories runs a common thread - their appreciation of doing business in Ventura plus the value they place on their service and the people who frequent their shops.

Here are just a couple of these stories starting with Dawn Moran who welcomes "children of all ages" at her Jack N Jill's hair salon at 1984 East Main Street. Established 14 years ago, stylist and owner Dawn takes special care with her younger patrons to make their haircut a comfortable experience for them. Her philosophy is simple and reflected in her bright face and the environment she has created.

Understanding that working with kids is different than working with adults. She chats with them and entertains them as she cuts their hair. Dawn feels it is most important to be "compassionate, patient and quick". With ride-on and play toys for the younger set along with foos ball, air hockey and Ms. Pac Man ready to go as well, she works to make it a "family salon" where parents can come and get their own hair cut while the kids play safely right there.

Colorful ocean murals painted by a local Ventura artist add just the right touch to it all and it would be hard to imagine a family not feeling welcomed and valued here.

This Midtown salon adds the unique to what Ventura offers. If this were just a review of the shops, it would end here. But these are stories, their stories of the people who own their own shops and the people who work there, thereby adding to the community they do business in. When you pass through the doors of these shops take another look, ask a few questions and take the time to make it a bit more personal. You'll find it becomes much more than it seems on first glance. Tell them "Kathy O'Keefe" and "Town Biz 101" sent you.

Save Our Country
Buy American

By: R. Ellis Smith
Posted: 09/01/10

It all started for me when I was looking to buy a Christmas bicycle for my granddaughter. I went to all the usual places, Toys R Us, Target, Wal-Mart, and etc. To my amazement and utter disgust the only bicycles I could find were made in China. I went on the Internet and searched for American made bicycles, there are a plethora of them.

They are slightly more expensive than the cheap Chinese bicycles, however, considering you are getting a product made in the United States of America by American workers, and considering the product is much superior to the Chinese product, I didn't mind the extra cost at all.

Since that time I have looked on the Internet for just about everything I feel I want to buy at any given time:
  • Shoes, (American made)
  • Socks, (American made)
  • Shirts, (American made)
  • Pants, (American made)
I have a very extensive list of products that I have bought in the past year that are all American made. When I walk into a store for a particular item and upon looking at the label find it is made in China, I put it back and continue my search until I find what I am looking for made in the U. S. A.

Everybody talks about the economy being the main reason for the lack of jobs in the United States of America; of course, the economy does have much to do with it; however, the fact that in the past 20 years the largest percentage of our (use too be) American manufacturing companies have moved all of their product manufacturing to other countries, Japan, Taiwan, Mexico, Canada, Philippines, and most of all to China because of the cheap labor, is the biggest reason we are in the lowest job market in history in the U. S.

I have gone so far as to stop buying my (use too be) favorite beer, All American Budweiser, since they sold out to a foreign company. I now drink only small label beer made in America. It is such a shame when you go into a store like Wal-Mart, which I consider to be an extension of China and see hundreds of people filling their shopping carts with all those foreign made products, if only ½ of them would discontinue buying those Chinese made products I feel we would see an extreme upward movement in the American job market.

So if you or any of your friends are looking for a job and you continue to purchase those foreign made products you have nothing to gripe about. It may cost a bit more to always look for American made products; but, you will at least have the satisfaction of knowing you are doing your part to bring America back to being the world leader in product manufacturing and supplying jobs for American citizens.
