STRUCTURE FIRE SCHOOL CLASSROOM
By: David Endaya, Battalion Chief Posted: 05/01/12
On April 11, 2012 at 12:18 p.m., a Ventura City Fire crew responded to a fire alarm ringing at Elmhurst School in the 5000 block of Elmhurst Street.
Upon the engine company's arrival, staff members directed the crew to an unoccupied classroom stating that it was on fire after attempts to control it with extinguishers did not work. The school had already been evacuated, with all students accounted for per the school's policy.
The initial arriving crew found an active and growing fire in the classroom and immediately called for a full response of resources needed to control the emergency. Units from Ventura City and Ventura County Fire responded to assist with the firefight. One classroom sustained damage from the fire; however, it was held to the classroom of origin by the aggressive and quick attack of the initial arriving Firefighters.
The heat created by the smoke and fire in the classroom reached temperatures high enough to melt the smoke detector fixed to the ceiling. Several other classrooms in the building were inundated by smoke from the adjoining classroom.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by Ventura City Fire Investigators. No injuries were reported to any children, staff, or firefighters. The Ventura City Fire Department would like to remind all schools of the importance of conducting regularly scheduled fire drills throughout the year. In this case, it was clear the faculty and students knew exactly what to do and where to go during the emergency.
No injuries were reported - civilian or by firefighters. The cause is still under investigation. Twenty fire personnel were at the scene of the fire plus four paramedic engines, one paramedic ladder truck, three commands and one fire investigator. Among the agencies involved were: Ventura City Fire, Ventura County Fire, Ventura Police, and AMR Ambulance. Damage estimate is $10,000 structural and $7,500 content

STRUCTURE FIRE RESPONSE
By: Jack Hansen Posted: 05/30/12
On April 30, 2012 at 8:18 p.m., Ventura City Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 700 block of Cedar Street. Upon arrival of the first-due engine, smoke was emitting from a laundry room. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish flames that were inside a commercial clothes dryer extending outside of the dryer into the laundry room.
Due to aggressive action by firefighters, they stopped the forward progress of the fire and extinguishments were accomplished quickly. Additional crews ascended to the second floor above the involved room to check for extension of the fire into those residences with none found.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The damage estimate is $1,000 to building and contents. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters. PHONE SCAM - THEFT BY FALSE PRETENSES
By: Cpl. J. Hixson, VPD Posted: 05/01/12
On 4/4/12 at 1500 hours, Ventura Police Officers responded to the report of an elderly resident that had been victimized by unknown suspects using a phone scam tactic. According to the victim, she received a phone call at her residence from an unknown male who claimed to be a police officer and told the victim her grandson had been arrested for drug charges. The caller identified the victim's grandson by name and used a second suspect to impersonate the victim's grandson in a plea for help. Both suspects claimed the victim needed to send over $2000 in cash to secure the release of the victim's grandson from jail.
The victim feared for the safety of her grandson and gathered the funds together then sent cash via Western Union to an address in Lima, Peru. The victim became suspicious when the suspect called the next day and requested more money. After speaking to her true grandson and discovering he had not been arrested and did not need money for bail, the victim realized she had been scammed and called the police.
The Ventura Police Department would like to remind all residents that these types of phone scams are common and very difficult to investigate when money is sent overseas. Be wary of callers asking for cash donations or fund-raising attempts that involve sending or receiving money from overseas callers. Before sending cash anywhere ask a trusted friend or family member to look at the proposal and if you think a scam may be taking place call your Police Department.

FIREARM - SWAT DEPLOYMENT
By: Det. Sgt. Rick Murray, VPD Posted: 05/01/012
On 04/08/12 at about 1540 hours, the Ventura Police Department responded to a call of shots fired with a female screaming in the 7900 block of Stone Street. Responding officers arrived on scene to investigate when additional shots were fired.
Officers attempted to make contact with Rorke inside of the residence but were unsuccessful. Due to the increased danger to officers and the surrounding community the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team was deployed to the scene. Several nearby residences were evacuated due to the dangerous situation.
Officers from the SWAT team attempted to negotiate with Rorke for several hours. Those negotiations failed and subsequently tear gas was deployed into the residence. Once the tear gas was introduced, negotiations were attempted again but to no avail.
After negotiations and tear gas failed to have the suspect exit her residence, the SWAT team made entry and took Rorke into custody after a brief struggle.
Rorke was taken to the Ventura County Medical Center and treated and release for tear gas inhalation. She was then booked into Ventura County Jail for discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner. She is being held on $50,000 bail.
