JOHNNY CASH FESTIVAL HEADLINER WANDA JACKSON TO SING AS TRIBUTE TO THE MUSIC OF CASH AT THIS YEAR
By: Tom Sellwood Ann Flower Communications Posted: 04/25/12
(Ventura, CA) - "You've got a song you're singing from your gut, you want that audience to feel it in their gut." Johnny Cash said that nearly 20 years ago and it still rings true today.
On June 16 in Ventura, headliner Wanda Jackson and other artists will pay tribute to Johnny Cash by 'singing from their gut' and making the audience 'feel it in their gut,' just the way Johnny Cash would have wanted it.
Although the announcement comes over 50 years after the first time she toured the US (with none other than Elvis Presley), it's an exciting time in Wanda Jackson's career. In 2009, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 2011, Jackson released her latest album, "The Party Ain't Over," featuring covers of Bob Dylan's "Thunder On The Mountain," and Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good." The "Queen of Rock" earned her title for pioneering the Rockabilly scene and blazing the trail for other female artists. Jackson is sure to be a crowd favorite at the festival with covers of Johnny Cash along with her famous original Rockabilly work.
Of course, a music festival paying tribute to Johnny Cash wouldn't be complete without cover bands fully dedicated to preserving the legend of the "Man In Black" himself. One of these bands is Ventura-based Big River. Big River is a four-person, "loving tribute to the Man in Black." For audience members who are craving a little Cash, this is a must-see.
Additionally, the four-man tribute group, "With A Bible And A Gun", will pay their own tribute to Cash. "With A Bible And A Gun" started out by playing to the prison inmate population in Norco, CA. Originally, they didn't play any Cash, but after playing in the prison, they felt that "The Spirit Of Johnny Cash" was there and eventually morphed into what they are today - the biggest Johnny Cash cover band in the Los Angeles area.
Joining Wanda Jackson and the cover bands at the music festival is the native Ventura band, "Big Tweed," a six-member group with a sound straight out of the golden age of country music. Their music has been described as "the soundtrack to the honky tonk in all of us." True to the Rockabilly way of life, Big Tweed loves channeling Cash, whether it's in a country barn, a dimly lit-bar, or at the local county fair.

"Put on your party pants, grab a beer, and get down on the dance floor at one of our next shows!" This direct order comes from Kyle Hunt and the King Gypsy hailing from Oak View, CA. Formed in early 2008, the gritty four-member band plays a range of music, from rock and roll originals to raging covers. They love playing shows in California, so they'll really bring the rock this June in Ventura.
Jeff Hershey and the Heartbeats, another band recently added to the lineup, are sure to get the crowd going at the Father's Day weekend music festival. Recently this bands was called the group, "simply one of the best live bands to ever come from the area."
Their combination of rock and roll, soul, and punk music packs venues and fuels the crowds. Hershey plans to bring his raucous style to Ventura this June and truly give the audience something to dance and sing along to.
