COMMUNITY CRIME ALERT DUE TO UNLOCK VEHICLES & RESIDENTIAL DOORS
By: Commander Brock Avery, VPD Posted: 05/02/12 Incident: Community Crime Alert - Continuing upward trend in residential burglaries, Vehicle burglaries and theft from unlocked vehicles during the first three months of 2012. Location: Multiple locations throughout the City of Ventura. (More detailed information regarding incident locations can be obtained by contacting our Crime Analysis Unit at (805) 339-4357 or by accessing crime map information at www.cityofventura.net/ pd/crime/calls#map) During the first three months of 2012, the Ventura Police Department has experienced an increase in the number of reported residential burglaries committed throughout the City of Ventura. From January 1 through March 31, 2012, VPD has responded to 150 Calls For Service (CFS) involving residential burglaries. The upward trend in property crime seen last year is continuing this year. The sharpest rise is burglary to residential garages. Of most significance is that more than 47% of residential burglaries occurred during the daytime hours (6 a.m. to 6 p.m. hours), and 40% were the result of doors, windows, or garage doors being left open or unlocked. The same upward trend is continuing with regard to vehicle burglary and theft from unlocked vehicles. Ventura Police Department had 88 vehicle 459's reported in the first quarter of 2012, compared to 84 for first quarter of 2011. This represents a 5% increase over 2011. As far as the individuals committing the crimes it varies from re-offending parolees, juveniles, drug offenders, or even individuals who live in other cities that come into Ventura to commit these types of crimes. In some cases there may only be one suspect responsible for the commission of the crime; however, our department believes the majority of individual(s) committing these types of burglaries work in groups of two to four people. Suspects go door-to-door with offers of handyman/contracting type services or magazine sales to anyone who is home. When they don't get an answer, they walk around to the side yards or backyards. First they look for open doors, windows, garage doors, or even doggy doors to gain entry through. As a last resort they will break a small window to gain access and the trend is the suspects target a window in the rear of a residence. The suspect(s) typically look for easy items to grab and walk away with. Items include money, small electronics, laptop computers, gaming systems (X Box, Playstation), jewelry, personal documents, guns, etc. The department has seen an increase in burglaries to vacant residences and homes under renovation. The suspects target building materials (copper pipe and wire), tools, appliances, and small equipment. Investigating this type of theft is difficult because of the lack of guardianship and the large number of workers that frequent a site. We need the public's assistance to monitor vacant homes in neighborhoods and call the police if suspicious activity occurs. The trend in burglary and thefts from vehicles is that suspects are casing vehicles and targeting items that are left in plain view inside a vehicle. Computers, purses, luggage, wallets, phones and anything in plain view are targets. The suspects smash windows to access the items and the crime is completed in just seconds. Patrol Officers, Detectives, and our Crime Analysis Unit are working diligently and have made multiple arrests over the last few months of individuals. Our Detectives, primarily our Street Crimes Unit (SCU) focuses on these types of crimes, continue to target known and repeat property crime offenders and identify the individuals responsible. As shown on the map, the incidents are wide spread; however, we continue to work to try and identify any patterns that may emerge, or particular areas of focus, and we utilize predictive forecasting when available. We also provide extra patrol, when we can, to areas that may be affected. Investigations are ongoing and arrests of individuals are made as evidence and investigations move forward.
