FILLMORE ARTIST
LUANNE HEBNER-PEREZ

By: Luanne Hebner-Perez
Posted: 04/26/12

The watercolor paintings by Fillmore, California artist, Luanne Hebner-Perez, are bright, colorful scenes of the Heritage Valley in Ventura County. Others are of places visited in the United States and in Italy, France and Austria. She often begins her work on site and then uses her many photographs to inspire the completion of the paintings.

Luanne has painted with well-known local artists and several international artists/teachers. Her decorative arts training and sense of composition has made her art appealing.

Educated at U.C. Santa Barbara and U.C. Davis, of which, she receive a secondary school teacher of vocational arts degree. Hebner-Perez taught at Fillmore Junior High School. She is the founding member of Artists Guild of Fillmore, member of Buenaventura Art Association and Santa Paula Society of the Arts. Luanne is a born Californian who loves creating paintings of this beautiful state and of her European heritage.

Luanne Perez began to paint in the 1970's and was surprised that she could. She learned with oils creating Americana landscapes. Now she works with watercolors of Ventura County where she lives and favorite places in Europe where she's traveled.

Artists Statement:

I believe
having pictures on walls finishes each room, especially if you love to look closely at the images, as I do. These paintings - of places of significance, beautifully produced with appealing colors - stir the pride of owning an original work of art.

I paint
familiar locales that people recognize whether close by, places remembered or sites they may wish to visit one day. I most love painting landscapes and choose watercolors because of their clean look, the way the color blends and the vibrancy of the hues.

My style
is straightforward; it has been called "representational", which I take to mean that you will recognize what it is I have painted. I use warm colors with strong notes of pure pigment. I know when my work is complete because I say "yes" to my own question, "Does this picture have a real sense of place?"

I hope
my work pleases you enough to say, "I just love this painting. I am so glad it's mine!"

"CONQUEST OF THE AMERICAS" BY GEORGE STUART NEW HISTORICAL FIGURES® EXHIBITION & MONOLOGUES

By: Susan Gerrard
Director Of Marketing
Museus Of Ventura County
Posted: 04/26/12

For more than five decades, artist and historian George Stuart has created one-quarter life-size Historical Figures® to accompany his dramatic historical monologues. His Historical Figures® represent powerful leaders of many historical periods. Along with American founders and patriots, he has made groups of figures to illustrate French, English, Russian, Chinese and Italian history and the conquest of the Americas.

To date, he has created more than four hundred Historical Figures® that have been exhibited at this Museum, the Ojai Valley Museum, the Smithsonian Institution, the Bill Clinton Presidential Library, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and private collections.

In 1979, Stuart donated 200 of his figures to the museum. In 2010 he was commissioned to create a Historical Figure® of the Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island. His Figures are exhibited on rotation in the museum's Smith Gallery and Stuart continues to deliver monologues in the museum's Martha K. and Martin V. Smith Pavilion.

Conquest of the Americas, the newest exhibition of George Stuart Historical Figures® at the Museum of Ventura County, illustrates how conquistadors, explorers and settlers brought far-reaching consequences for the indigenous peoples of the Americas and for the entire world

Among the 27 one-quarter life-size figures are those of Christopher Columbus, Hernán Cortés, Moctezuma II, Malinche, Junipero Serra, Alexander Mackenzie, Jedediah Smith, and John Charles Frémont.

The exhibit opens May 22 and runs through August 5. Two related monologues by artist and historian George Stuart are both presented on Tuesdays at 3:00 p.m.:
  • Age of the Conquistadors is June 19
  • Exploring the Western Frontier is July 31

FOX FINE JEWELRY ART GALLERY FEATURES
OJAI ARTISTS DUANE DAMMEYER,
NANCY HORWICK & KERRY CRANK

By: Debbie Fox, Curiator
Posted: 03/31/12

Duane Dammeyer, Nancy Horwick and Kerry Crank will display their art in a show titled "Three visions ~ Ojai Style" at Fox Fine Jewelry from March 22 through May 14, 2012.

Duane Dammeyer is a stone sculptor who works in alabaster, marble, granite and other stones. Dammeyer graduated from the University of Cincinnati with an engineering degree and studied art at Ventura College. He later acquired construction and masonry experience. In his free time he enjoys nature and is an avid hiker. Engineering, construction, art and nature all play a part in his creations.

Dammeyer's sculptures as photoed above combines geometric forms, and integrate multiple stones into a single sculpture. Other pieces are fluid and organic, with sensuous curves. All of his work shows his acute attention to detail.

Dammeyer is president of California Sculptor's Symposium, Inc. and vice-president of the Ojai Studio Artists, Inc.

Nancy Horwick has lived in Ojai, CA since 1981, the year she had her daughter. Nearly twenty years ago, Horwich began teaching elementary school. She started taking art classes to teach art better. Horwick says of her early days in art, "Suddenly I'd find that hours had gone by, and I was still raring to go! I used pastels, acrylic paint, encaustic and water colors, but when I tried oils I fell in love. I have focused on oil painting techniques for the last ten years."

Horwick is drawn to the style of 19th century artists, and her paintings focus on beautiful and interesting scenes and people, capturing small details that are often overlooked. A photo of her art is, also, displayed above.

Kerry Crank as displayed in photo above, grew up in Wisconsin, and majored in fine art at the University of Wisconsin. In 1973, she moved to Southern California, working in food manufacturing and the floral industry for over twenty years.

An Ojai, CA resident for the last ten years, she paints like her personality: brightly and expressively. Her studio is her garage, which she shares with her 1923 Buick ("Miss Ellie") and her two great Danes.

For information on the show, contact Debbie Fox at (805) 652-1800. Fox Fine Jewelry is located at 210 East Main Street, in Historic Downtown Ventura, across the street from the Mission. Hours are:
Monday - Thursday, 10:30 a.m. - 6 p.m., Fridays - Saturdays 10:30 a.m. - 8 p.m.

CARRIE DAWN'S EPIPHANY INSTILLS
HER PHOTOGRAPHY CREATIVITY

By: Terry Bray, Curator
Gallery Of The Crowne
Posted: 03/31/12

Carrie Dawn never before considered herself an artist until three years ago when she had an epiphany while brushing her teeth! She noticed how artfully the natural sunlight cast geometric shapes and patterns onto the porcelain surface of her bathtub. Using her bathtub as a miniature studio, she started placing props such as marbles and rose petals and began taking photographs.

Being intrigued by the natural rainbow affects created by the sun's ultraviolet light, she continued exploring compositions incorporating various items such as real flowers, glass items and textile pieces. Almost immediately, her photographs gained recognition at an overwhelming rate.

Since that epiphany of three years ago, she has appeared in the Life Style Section of the Santa Clarita Signal and featured in the Ventura County Star newspaper. Recently she appeared on two radio shows and has exhibited twice at the Lloyd Taber Marina Del Rey Library. Just last December, she was the cover story in the Santa Clarita Living Magazine and her work was featured in a spiritual television show "Bridging Heaven and Earth".

Currently she is exhibiting some of her work in the "SPRING '12" show at GALLERY AT THE CROWNE inside the Crowne Plaza Ventura Beach hotel in Ventura, CA and congruently showing in a gallery in Milford, New Hampshire. In the near future she will have a solo showing of her work in the gallery of Gardens of the World in Thousand Oaks, CA.
